White Sea Glass

White sea glass started out as clear colorless glass. The frosty effect created by the elements makes it look more white than clear. I find that white sea glass is under appreciated. When you hold up a piece of clear glass to white sea glass the difference is startling. What was once clear glass is now pure sea glass frost!

Medicines and chemicals were often bottled in colored glass to protect them from light. Other than those items just about everything has come in clear bottles or jars. Milk, perfume, olive oil, nail polish, beverages...Don Q, a Puerto Rican rum, comes in clear glass and I'll bet a lot of white seaglass comes from that!

I have a perfume bottle with "Porto Rico" embossed on it that I found in a streambed. This helps to date seaglass as Puerto Rico was spelled Porto Rico until 1932.

Seaglass pieces of Victorian windows are also found embossed with patterns. Some of the white seaglass comes from decorative pressed glass and crystal.
